Mensa is an international society for people who score in the top 2% on accepted intelligence tests. Founded in 1946 in Oxford, England, Mensa now has approximately 150,000 members worldwide. The first American members joined in the early 1950s, and today American Mensa includes more than 50,000 members—making it the largest national Mensa organization in the world.
As the Mensa Constitution states, one of the organization’s primary goals is “to provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its members.” At Mensa, it’s not just about IQ; it’s about the shared experience of being exceptional together. It’s about connecting with people who value curiosity, thoughtful conversation, and intellectual growth.
Southern Connecticut Mensa is the local chapter of American Mensa serving Fairfield County, Connecticut. We have over 225 members locally and regularly connect with several hundred more through our neighboring chapter, Connecticut & Western Massachusetts Mensa. While we share a common IQ requirement, everything else about our membership varies widely.
Our members range from kindergarteners to nonagenarians. We come from all over the country and represent a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and life experiences. The only thing we have in common is curiosity — everything else varies. That diversity of perspectives is what makes our conversations interesting and our community feel alive.
Southern Connecticut Mensa is run entirely by volunteers. Leadership exists to support the community — organizing events, handling communications, and helping create opportunities for members to connect.
If you’re interested in getting involved, whether by helping with events, sharing ideas, or supporting the chapter in other ways, we’re always happy to hear from you.
Above all, we strive to create an environment where people can be intellectually challenged, socially connected, and genuinely have fun.
